I have worked with students of all ages and abilities, from complete beginner to Diploma - my aim is to enable students to progress without constrictions / boundaries. I hope to inspire everyone who has the desire to play the flute well, developing their interest and providing the necessary information, skills and confidence to fulfil their goals.

Many common flute playing problems stem from tension (in the fingers, arms, lips, tongue, throat, shoulders and back). The starting point in my teaching is to establish good breathing and posture, essential for achieving optimum tone, dynamic range, intonation control and clear articulation. In order for the finger technique to work freely, the flute must be supported correctly through good hand position and balance. Essentially, all the contributory components need to work together e.g. light, controlled finger action not only enables a flautist to manage fast and technically challenging passages but also facilitates beautiful, smooth phrasing. Good hand position not only enables free, unrestricted technique but also controls the connection of the flute on the embouchure and is therefore critical in producing the best sound possible.

From the earliest stages of learning, I encourage pupils to use their technical accomplishment and secure foundations in tone production to benefit the music and to play with fluency, character and contrast.

Many of the skills I aim to nurture and develop are qualities that will benefit students beyond their musical studies. Communication skills, confidence building, how to overcome difficulties, manage limited time, develop strategies to improve on a daily basis, in the short-term, perhaps over a week or two and over longer periods (where are you now and where would you like to be in a year?)

 

EXAMS!!

With a proven, highly successful record in ABRSM exam results, I value the framework and motivation that comes from preparing for exams - however, I believe it is preferable that they form part of an overall strategy rather than the sole purpose of learning an instrument. Exam preparation should not dictate the content of a lesson. If you learn to play the instrument well, faster progress and exam success will come naturally.
